Is there any good way to convert a tape to an Mp3 file and retain the high quality of the original?

Will I have to have this done professionally to get good results?

and those of you in E.Y...can anyone give me advice about who can do it, where to have it done etc..?

I know there's a pc of equipment that looks a bit like a cd player... you put the tape in, plus an empty cd and it writes to it. however it works like a 'copy machine'... so it's not your best quality.

I have a machine which plugs into my computer, and I play the cassette tape, and it gets recorded via a program on the computer, and then I can save it as an MP3 or a WAV file and then copy it over, accordingly.

What kinds of tapes do you want to copy over?

Are you happy with the quality? Does it sound as good as the original tape or is there alot of static?
TIA

I'm not sure how well this method works, but I've been looking to do the same, and came across this link: http://www.ehow.com/how_204486......html

additionally, we had this one at the office, and it was excellent:

No static at all. You're recording from the tape recorder directly onto the computer, not a microphone.

Its excellent quality.

You really don't even need to special hardware from thinkgeek. Just plug your walkman directly into your computer (you do need the right audio cord from an electronics store) & most audio programs will let you rip them to mp3.

DH does this on the side (for parnassa). PM me for details.

That is entirely true. I just didn't have a functioning tape player!

Audacity is free, and works great, by the way.

I think I'd have to do that professionally, because sound would have to be added.

Wow I never knew it was so simple! A google search shows a cable like that selling for $1. Now I know what my next project is!

I wonder if such a cord would be available also here in Israel - something well worth looking into - yeshar koach mimivan for bringing up such a good idea!
