My cousin is not frum and asked me for help coming up with a name in case she has a girl (she has chosen a boy's name already). She wants to name the baby after our grandmother who was a Holocaust survivor. She passed away when we were fairly young so we don't remember her that well. The characteristics my cousin gave me are "Always with a warm, welcoming smile. She loved us with all her heart." She wants a modern Hebrew/Israeli name. I am stumped. Any ideas?

Noam is a boy's name AFAIK. No'a is the feminine version.

Actually, noam is used for girls as well in modern israeli societies.

I am assuming this person who needs a baby name isn't in Israel. I would not go with Noam because it can come out rhyming with gnome.

Most of these names aren't exactly modern (ahuva, simcha, chaviva, etc.)
Na'ama is a beautiful name and has the right meaning as well as Naomi which is also classic and would go well in an English speaking envoironment. Noam can go either way but is more common for girls.

Noa has nothing to do with the noam names, it's a great name but has to do with actions like rest of Zlofchad's daughters names.

Thanks so much for the ideas.

I agree with PP that Ahuva and Simcha are not very modern (although nice names - my mom actually suggested Ahuva and asked if there is any modern name with the same meaning).

Na'ama would be good but my cousin's name is Nachama.

She does live in America, I think someone asked.

I like Re'ut, especially because my grandmother's name started with an R. (I don't care about the letter matching - if I'm going to name a baby after someone I use their actual name, and neither does my cousin - she just wants a name that will remind her of Grandma, but I think if she's going to do that it might as well start with R.) We have a mutual cousin who just named her baby Re'ut but it probably doesn't matter to either of them.

Up until very recently I had never heard Noam as a girl's name. I think it's kind of weird but she might like it. Noa is also (or at least was recently) the most common girl's name in Israel. I think she will probably like one of these names but I will give her the whole list.

Thanks so much, and feel free to keep em coming!

Noam on a girl makes no sense to me, and will be weird in many circles. I can see kids teasing and adults forever needing to be corrected: no, it's not a boy, no it's not Noa...

How about Shalva? Not modern but still nice.
Shalhevet (no, not OUR Shalhevet would remind me of keeping the ember glowing. Shalhevet is a small flame if I am not mistaken. I love that name and decided upon it for my first daughter when I was in HS. Oh well, no daughters.....)

What was your grandmother's name? Perhaps that can help find a name.
