HOW DO PEOPLE DO IT???? Currently DH makes about 60K (used to be more but we left our second job and after a yr are still looking for a second income). After taxes and health insurance we are left with about half that for the year. School for both my kids (under first grade) is supposed to be 12,000. I have no idea how to swing that. It's half what we are making. Currently we live with family (see job issue) but we pay for much of our own things. DH is asking for a reduction, but it seems so ludicrious to ask for it in nursery. But they are both old enough that they need to go to school for part of the day.
DH works at a day school, so we are hoping for a better than average situation when they get to grade school but still....this is insane. After all the other basics (car insurance, food, gas, some clothing) we are totally maxed out!

I'm amother who has a great paying plan, but I don't want to say where I live because basically that is the ONLY good thing about the school. We are very unhappy with the school, but there are no other choices (aside from homeschooling which I consider every few weeks when we have yet another incident)

devorie- if you are going to choose a community based on tuition, that's not chassidish, look in to South bend, Cincinatti (has vouchers), scranton and may be rochester but I think that they cost more.

I don't have any school aged kids yet but this post is making me so nervous! Do you have to pay the full amount at the beginning of the year or can you pay per month???

Pay per month. Some schools take postdated checks, many use a tuition management system like FACTS. They do NOT expect you to have a year's salary ready in September!

Someone mentioned Cincinnati -- the elementary school is $9000 (-$100 for each additional kid I think) with state vouchers for $4250 regardless of income.

Right- they don't expect a year's salary ready in September, just by the end of the school year.

This is nuts!

Most couples I know who have tens of thousands of dollars in tuition bills have both parents working. One to pay tuition, and one to pay for the rest of their living needs.

High school. Tuition with all fees is about $28,000 per child per year. We receive a reduction due to DH's medical condition.
