Is it better to freeze lasagna raw or cooked? Also, can I use american cheese instead of shredded cheese?

cooked.
try making it with cottage cheese. It comes out delicious. you just need a little hard cheese for the top layer.

So sounds like either way would work I guess I will just see if I have time to bake it after I assemble it.
I thought you need both cottage cheese and shredded cheese...?

I freeze cooked. I roll my lasagna around cottage cheese, shredded and farmer and then on top I layer american. I also use lots of veggies.

I would freeze it cooked. Sometimes, depending on the type and quality, cheeses do not freeze well. they can change texture, etc. Sometimes this corrects itself when you bake it, but I've had some disasters.
I use cottage (or farmers) and shredded. American would work instead of the shredded.

Cooked. I use cream cheese in ours and mozzarella on top. Personally I'm not sure how American cheese would be but you can always try it, I never expected to like the cream cheese either (was using it up) and now it's a must.

I've only tried it once so far but I froze it cooked then warmed it in the oven from frozen and it came out great.
I use white sauce sprinkled with a little parmasan for the middle layers, then the same for the top but with more parmasan.

I have frozen it both raw and cooked. Lasagna generally freezes quite well either way. When I'm preparing dinners in advance, I use raw lasagna noodles, assemble and freeze it raw with some extra liquid. During the freeze/thaw time, the noodles absorb the liquid. You can do this with regular lasagna noodles. You don't have to use the more expensive no-boil noodles.
