I'm not going to bother with basic biology lessons to amother, since I suspect that these are not legit posts.

If anyone with a real screen name wants to know more about genetics, let me know.

There is an eye colour predictor website, somewhere on the internet. I've lost the address but I remember it said only a few % of chances for that, maybe even less (under 1%)

Weirdly, this other predictor says no way
http://museum.thetech.org/ugen......html

This was interesting Ruchel. I have brown eyes and DH has blue, so I would've thought those would be our colors, but....with our parents in the mix (brown and green on my side, blue/blue from my in-laws) it predicted browns and greens in my children and no blues at all, which is correct so far. Two older DD's are brown and younger DD is green.

I'm not giving up on a blue yet....

The eye color predictor was pretty accurate I thought.
It said that we have a %15 chance of a blue, 85% chance of green and 0 chance of brown.

Out of three kids, two have green and one has blue!

Out of the 4 grandparents, only one has blue, so it was rather surprising that one of mine ended up with blue.

We get a lot of comments about her eyes because they are quite a virbrant blue.

kind of off topic, but did you know red heads are in danger of dying out in a few generations?

Quote:
in this documentary from BBC Northern Ireland, presenter Owen O’Neill embarks on a journey to find out if the ginger gene really could become extinct, as he goes on a voyage of discovery of all things red haired.

Being a man of ginger hue himself he can appreciate how tough it can be to grow up with a carrot top. In this quest to save the Ginger Gene, Owen travels across Northern Ireland and over to England and the US to talk with prominent red heads. Included among these are famous ginger footballer Neil Lennon, ginger Royal correspondent, Nicholas Witchell and ginger gardener, Charlie Dimmock.

To find out a bit more about why the gene may be dying out, Owen asks celebrity gardener Charlie if she finds her fellow red haired male attractive:
“You would be worried about getting too much grief,” Charlie says: “I wouldn’t say I’m attracted to red headed men but I’m not un-attracted to them. It wouldn’t upset me if someone was red headed, but I can imagine the arguments, because we do have fiery tempers.”

Owen also delves into the world of genetics and finds out why this fiery gene is diminishing. He chats with Professor Steve Jones from University College London, a leading geneticist who says that the red head is deteriorating due to ethnically mixed parenting, smaller families and the fact that many red heads are marrying people from outside their immediate area. In fact he argues that in a few short generations the Ginger Gene could be bred out of existence completely.

To spread the frightening news that the Ginger Gene may be no more, Owen travels to America to find out if people are worried about this phenomenon across the pond. He guests on ‘Good Morning America’, as well as meeting Paul Labrecque, a hairdresser who specialises in red hair and the Princeton Red Head Society.

Chief of Staff, Anne Margaret Daniel from the Princeton Red Head Society shares her views on how Gingers are represented, “I am really tired the way Red Heads are portrayed, in literature, in movies, in advertising. Now that I think about it, every off beat, quirky, venal, sadistic, bad-tempered and lascivious character is a red head.” However, hope in sight as Owen meets an expecting couple who will potentially give birth to a Ginger baby. Will they be the ones to carry on the gene?

Owen O’Neill says, “My ginger journey has been a very enlightening experience for me both from a historical point of view and a scientific point of view. Is the red head gene in danger of extinction? Well scientists seem to be divided about that, come back in 200 years and ask me. Are we an opposed minority? I don’t think so, but we are 1% of the world’s population which makes us different and makes us rare and I think that’d the way we like it.”

That's because of intermarriage, not because of climate!

no, even with regular afro american families, not intermarrying, ive noticed the skin tones are gradually getting lighter. if you look at african people who still live in the "alte haim" their skin tones are nearly black,,, really dark dark brown. but here their tones are way more brown.
interracial people have more of a lighter tone of brown, almost like a puerto rican brown, often called mocha

I wouldn't call it intermarriage...often times slave women were raped by their slave owners....there is very high statistic as to what percentage of African Americans have a white ancestor. I will try to look it up.

Right. When you look at DNA studies of African American, there is always a substantial genetic component that didn't originate in Africa, iykwim. It has nothing to do with climate and everything to do with the fact that blacks were treated as chattel to be bred and sold - and didn't matter if the sire was the slave owner.

Canada's climate is much colder and less sunny than the US. Blue eyes fair skin will absorb better the sun-vitamin D.

Again, why would you be posting as amother?

Yes, fair skin absorbs vitamin D better. So what? That doesn't alter genetic structure.

If vitamin D was ONLY available from sunlight and if a deficiency resulted in death prior to childbearing, natural selection could reduce the percentage of people with darker skin over generations, or people with darker skin tones wouldn't move to Canada. However, with vitamin D supplements and fortified milk, it's not a significant issue.

This is basic high school science.

JRkmommy I'm amother due to the handful of FBI agents here trying to figure everyone's identity Smile . I discuss thid stuff with people irl too.
One parent of the family who moved to Canada has brown eyes and the other has blue. Their genetic makeup did'nt change, only the selection. I guess the colder climate sort of "chose" the blue gene. That family later returned to the Us where they had a few more brown eyed children.

you keep saying that this is basic biology, basic high school science.
in other words, if I'm the one saying this, I'm stupid or ignorant for not knowing.
so why would I want to post under my sn and then be labeled as someone with an insufficient education?
and by the way, just because you might have learnt it in your high school, does not mean that every high school teaches it.
and if I use my sn, then when you see other posts under my sn, you will assume that I am coming from an ignorant standpoint. but I might be very intelligent and want to be taken seriously in other posts under my sn. in addition to this post.
amother could be used by intelligent people.
and we are not saying something so ridiculous. a number of different ppl are writing similar things- I know, because I am one of the amothers, but not all of them that are writing with this point of view about climate affecting looks.

If you're talking in terms of Darwin, that's not really how natural selection works...

(amother because I mentioned Darwin!)

Isn't there a school of thought that believes that Native Americans are from one of the lost Shvatim? So, there's your Jewish look right there!
