Depending on what caused the problem it could cost anywhere from $100-$1000. Yes, we have had both extremes, and in between! It could be roots in the pipes blocking the sewage, soaps and tissue paper from going down. This can be costly, but once it's taken care, it lasts for a long time. It could also be too much paper build up. This is why using tissues/kleenex on Shabbos is a very bad idea. The pipes are not meant for this type of paper, and cause blockages. It could also be a pipe burst. Or even too much water outside can cause a backup if it just rained heavilly in your area. We have had all of these! Call a repairman soon because if it one of the larger problems you will want to take care of it before it happens again!

We know the cause, the rain came down too fast and the sewer system in the area couldn't keep up so it backed up. We aren't the only ones. It wasn't because of our house or something we clogged the pitpes with. This was sewage coming up from the floor.

The pipes don't need fixing. Our basement after having 2 inches of sewage in it is another story. I was asking about how much it costs to tear the walls out and get the basement disinfected and then put it all back together again.

Sorry. It wasn't clear from your post that you knew the cause. Just trying to help.

Tearing out walls, and putting them back can cost a bunch. If there are beams on the other side of the drywall that are damaged, they need to be replace. Don't know if you have it, but what we did was put tiles around the base of the walls. It matches those on the floor and looks quite nice. This way if water comes in, even a lot, the walls don't get damaged.

We're working on the fixup after a similar event. We wound up making an insurance claim -- after our $2,000 deductible, they have paid us over $9,000 for the clean up (which they arranged and had to be done within 48 hours to be covered) and around $10,000 for reconstruction (which includes walls, cabinets, carpeting and some furniture). The affected part of our basement is 3 bedrooms, a hallway and part of the laundry area.
