2 T margarine
4 T oil
1/2 cup flour
2 onions, chopped
1/2 cup mayo
3/4 tsp salt
3.5 cups water + 2 T onion mix
5 large potatoes
paprika and black pepper

Melt margarine with oil. add flour, onions, mayo, salt, water and onion soup mix. Stir until smooth and forms a sauce.

Oven - 350 F

Slice potatoes in food processor. layer in 9x13 -
Sauce, sliced potatoes (overlap just minimally), sauce, potatoes and sauce (5 layers). Sprinkle top with paprika and pepper. bake uncovered 1.5 hours until potatoes are crispy. put under grill if necessary.

(can use 1/2 white potatoes, 1/2 sweet potatoes and not use margarine and can sub onion mix for chicken soup mix)

I make it fresh on the morning I serve it. I find that potato dishes are the best fresh.

I know that, but I'm willing to sacrifice a little quality (and it's only a little) to prepare in advance (I got to shul, and I've got lots of guests). Otherwise, I just wouldn't make it at all.

Yeh. I understand that. I'd do the same in your position. I just wrote that in case anyone else wants to make this dish. Smile

Did you find that there was a lot of sauce. It seemed like maybe too much. Maybe I needed more potatoes although I did use 5 large ones. It does look and taste delicious though. Just wondering if it is supposed to be so casserole-like, so liquidy. Thanks.

looks/sounds really good but thats a heck of a lot of marg/oil/mayo
do you use all of it or can you sub some of it w/o compromising the taste?

I did find that it was a bit too saucy and IIRC I poured off some.

I've made this recipe and used just a drop of margarine/oil instead of all that's called for. And it was still delicious!

I've sliced them by hand before. Just make them pretty thin.
