My daughter, 5, has a cavity. My regular dentist said he can do it (covered under insurance) but that he's not really equipped to deal specifically with children and often the child cannot tolerate the filling. He suggested going to a pediatric dentist (not covered by insurance).
Does anyone have experience with filling cavities in young children? Who did the work?

I use a pediadontist. It makes the whole experience more pleasant if you have a good one. A regular dentist could do the same work, but it can be traumatizing for the child. Depending on your child's personality and the dentist's personality, it may pay to see a pediadontist.

I happen not to think it makes a difference. I used a dentist geared for children as a child, and he was really mean and not so kind. He yelled at me when I came every time, like why arent you brushing, and you need to take care of your teeth better, which I did. Mother was very makpid on us brushing all the time... I have very week teeth (genetic) and got cavities often... So I guess it really depends on the dentist you use.

And btw, I almost had to have a cavity filled in one of my wisdoms and the dentist was charging 148. I thought it would be much much more...

I know this is not the issue with the OP whose dentist is sending her to a pediatric dentist...
I cannot stress enough to always go for a second opinion. So many people have had very different opinions from a second look. I hear many stories of people who are told they dont need the work suggested by a previous dentist.

Um, why is a pediatric dentist not covered by insurance? I bring my kids to a pediatric dentist and insurance covers about 1/2 to most of the costs.

When DS#1 had to have emergency dental work done (trauma-related, not a cavity) we went to the pediadontist. It cost us not much more than the dentist would have, though we had to pay it completely out of pocket. But she was so good with him it was worth it. And even though we're NOT regular patients (disaster struck after hours and she STAYED to see us when I would not have been able to get to the regular dentist/pediadontist for 3 more days) she also discounted her fee and included the follow up visit at no additional charge.

Go to the specialist.
