Why would moms bother taking a childs rectal temprature when he has fever. Isnt it much easier to do it in the armpit and then simply consider it 2 degrees less than rectal, no? Or is it really inaccurate to calculate it like that?

I don't know, but its not really a bother to check rectal. The thermometor stays in place and you get an accurate reading.

Some consider it the only reliable way, especially the older generation.
We use an electronic thermometer in the ear. Quick, precise and painless.

only precise after 3 yo. If the ear is too small it can be wrong. Sometimes ppl get different temperature in different ears

Also no good on Shabbat. Rectally is fastest with a mercury thermometer. It takes forever to get an accurate anxillary (armpit) reading...kids fidget, thermometer gets dislodged...rectally is uncomfortable, but over pretty quick.
