Unfortunately, a person can't "have it all." I don't think that what you're looking for exists: easy access to Brooklyn, but much cheaper. There is no place nearby with easy access that;s "much cheaper."

For the other amother that posted a list of neighborhoods, I read an article recently in the HaModia about Stamford CT. It's a small, but growing community....might be worth checking into.

Exactly, if there's a place that's spitting distance from Brooklyn AND is much cheaper, then it's been a very well-kept secret for a long time.

You might want to check out Bays Water. . . I'm probably completely wrong, but I remember that a few blocks of houses were being built a few years ago. . . I think that they were being sold at reasonable prices. Maybe there are similar tracts being built now. I also heard that the Satmar community in Bayswater didn't work out, maybe they'll be selling their homes. My friend rents one of the two family houses in the Satmar neigborhood, I think her and her husband pay around $1000 for a 3 bedroom, 2 bath, large eat-in kitchen, living room and dining room.

According to google maps, Scranton to Brooklyn is 123 miles. I don't think that most people call that commuting distance, but I guess it depends on your perspective!
