Different communities are different. But in those I'm familiar with the thing that goes over the most his cholent with hot potato kugel and kishka (at least for the men). Of course pastries & cakes too. Salads if there'll be women, maybe cut up veggies too and fruit. Candy if kids will be there.

When I host an oneg (usually a few every year) I like to serve cholent! It's a real filler. Yes, warm potato kugel is good and then you need fewer cakes. (I find the cakes to be the hardest part even if it's just brownies.) Fill in with popcorn, chips (with dips if you want) and some candies and you're all set!

This is what I do. Men only usually and they're happy as long as there is liquor.
