I just spent the whole morning at the emergency room with my 3 yr. old dd. She has been complaining about pains in her knee since Shabbos, and was limping. I went to the doctor on Mon. and he said e/t seemed okay, and she had probably just pulled a muscle. Anyway, last night she came down with a fever AGAIN. I'm saying again, because she's been sick on and off (mostly on) for six weeks. First walking pneumonia, then CMV then just "stam" a virus. This morning she woke up with a high fever (close to 103) and could not stand up at all, she was in such pain!

I went back to the doctor, who again said he sees no indication that anything's wrong, but he sent us to the emergency room just to be safe. The doctors there seemed to agree with my doctor, but ran some blood tests and took an X-ray anyway. Everything came out normal.

Meanwhile, she's still running a fever, and still in agony and can hardly walk! What in the world can be causing this? Any thoughts? Any ideas on where to go and what to do from here? I'm a wreck! I'm also supposed to be going away for Shabbos with my dh's yeshiva. WWYD - would you go away? In theory, there's no reason not to, but for some reason I'm feeling really uneasy!
Any thoughts?

COuld be other things, of course, but when we had something similar with my son it turned out to be strep!

I'm sorry for what you're going through. The unknown is sometimes so much harder. I don't know if this would help you but I'll just add it. When I was a young kid I suddenly stopped walking. My parents went from Doctor to Doctor and noone saw the reason for it, until they got to a doctor somewhere who told them it's a rare virus and he also said that it's already tapering off. Shortly after I started walking again.

I'm sorry you are dealing with this.

I would only go away for Shabbos if you are near a good hospital.

And I have no idea what's wrong. But as a non-doctor, I would like to perscribe chicken soup.

Like someone else said, it's possible to have strep in places other than your throat. This happened to a neighbor of mine.

It's very possible that your dd leg pain is just a manifestation of another "typical" illness like strep etc..., but there are also other chronic illnesses that can have the symptoms that you're describing.

The one that specifically comes to mind is Juvenile Rheumatoid/Idiopathic Arthritis (JRA/JIA), the onset of which is commonly between the ages of 1.5-3 years, and its onset usually includes intermittent fevers for weeks or months, and mild to severe joint pain (with swelling of the joints, although sometimes the swelling may be minimal). A rheumatologist would be the best place to start. They will probably run a lot of specifc bloodwork (to look for rheumatoid and inflamatory markers and to rule out other illnesses) and send your dd for and MRI of her joints.

A neglected strep could travel down to the feet. But op mentioned that they've done blood tests so I assume they checked for that.

Some kids have severe leg pain when they're sick. There's a name for it, but I can't remember what it is. Basically, their hip joint swells up when they get sick, and they feel pain down to their knee. My dd's doctor suspects that she has it.

my dd everytime she gets sick she complains her knee hurts.

my doc said it's common in children to have pain in their knees when they are sick.

maybe she has a virus. what else is hurting her? I know by my dd I have to work really hard to get her past her knee to figure out what else is bothering her -she's 2.

Maybe your'e refering to toxic synovitis, my son gets it after a strept infection. He has a limp with hip swelling which only my ped sees. There's no treatment just motrin and rest.

Wow! That is so crazy! I can totally relate to what your parents went through!

The strep in the knee option many have you mentioned was tested for. All the results we got today were totally fine. There is one test we didn't get back yet, testing for bacteria in the blood (which I guess would include strep in the blood). We're supposed to call the hospital Sunday morning for those results. But for some reason the doctors seemed fairly sure it would be normal. Maybe because while we were there my dd was on Motrin, and did not seem to be in so much pain. It's too bad they didn't see her when we came home, after the Motrin wore off, and she got out of the car. She was crying hysterically, and could not walk. We had to carry her home.

As for Shabbos, I feel very uneasy going, but my husband does not share my concerns. In fact, he went today already, and I'm supposed to be joining with the kids tomorrow. I think there is a decent hospital pretty close, so at least I can be calm that we have somewhere to go in case of an emergency. A vacation it definitely won't be! Try going away with 5 kids, including a clingy 19 mo. old and a sick 3 yr. old who can barely walk!

Perhaps an xray or MRI on the joint that is effected might help. Its hopefully nothing serious, but perhaps they are missing something.

They did an X-ray, but not an MRI. If she's still complaining on Sunday, I'm going to take her to an orthopedist. Maybe he'll do an MRI.

hi first of all refuah sheleima!
second of all.. last year I was very sick and all the doctors I went to kept telling me that nothing was wrong with me. I even went to the emergency room where they did a ct scan and sent me home. I was throwing up and was losing my vision!!!! after going back to the er a 2nd time and doing an mri, one dr finally diagnosed me. so im not trying to freak u out. b"H im on medication now and doing really well. my point is that drs miss stuff. so you have to be a patient advocate and push push push!!! hopefully this is nothing but if it isnt, only u can be there in defense of your child! for me so many speacialists missed it...

feel free to pm me if you have any questions or need help

I have a family member who has this, and I second the suggestion to run the specific bloodwork needed to rule this out. The typical bloodwork may not look at any of these factors. In her case, the onset was following a virus. Also complaints of leg pain, fevers, etc.
