We have had very bad luck with challah boards for the past 2 years, and need yet another new one. We ordered one from eichlers and it was defective. We can return it, but return shipping will cost almost as much as the challah board did, so we may be driving down to return it (and do some grocery shopping at the same time).
If we do, we want to go into a local shop and buy a challah board. We dont want super fancy or expensive. We like simpler styles but we still want it to be nice for shabbos. We have had good luck with glass challah boards in the past.
Can anyone recommend a store that specifically may have what we are looking for?

maybe- anywhere if they have a website and reasonable shipping. Eichlers finally agreed to let us return for free

Tuvias and ZBerman are both big judaica companies that have websites. Though I do not know the exact address, neither their shipping rates. Maybe its worth doing a little search before traveling??

We have a few different styles of challah board.

My suggestion is if you buy in Brooklyn - you can get a custom made piece of plexi glass cut to fit the board that goes on top - that helps to keep them nice for a long time.

We have a large rosewood and silver (two actually) with plexiglass on top and also a natural colored one with a knife inside it. It's this one - http://www.alljudaica.com/Natu.....3.htm but we found the knife blade doesn't stay in the handle. Surprisingly we use this one the most because it has the smallest footprint on the table. We don't have plexiglass for this one, but I don't mind. I love the way it looks.

When we have a lot of men we use one of the larger ones and they all share one board.

I hope this helps!

ETA that Eichlers has it much cheaper http://www.eichlers.com/Produc......html

and a fancier version where the center piece comes out - http://www.eichlers.com/Produc......html

Just pointing out which one I DON'T recommend. This seems to be very popular but everyone I know who has it is not happy with it - the crumbs get stuck under the glass/plastic piece and it is impossible to clean.

I've learned to live with the crumbs. I clean it once or twice a year when I unscrew the bolts on the corners and give it a good cleaning.

My sister uses a nice glass tray from Mikasa.

I use the one I made in Camp Sternberg way back when :-)

This makes me wonder where my Spatt challah board is. I doubt my parents kept it, I'll have ask them.

What aidelmaidel said.
Also, I don't find gets so crumby. Just a few crumbs get under each time, before I put it away I turn it upside down and give a few taps, and maybe a couple of tiny crumbs stay behind. When I have a chance and it bothers me enough at the same time, it's easy enough to unscrew the top.
I did find that the paint chipped a little when it bumped into something and now it looks kinda cheap. Oh well.

This is more or less ours, but without the silver (which made it a very small fraction of the cost):

http://www.traditionsjewishgif......html

I bought it directly from the artisan, and can't find his information any more. I mention it because it is undoubtedly the only challah board we will ever need, and likely the only one that will ever be needed by whomever inherits it from me. It is indestructible, easy to clean, and the look and finish never deteriorates.

We got sick of dealing with the crumb issue and the broken glass once a year, and bought a gorgeous Kakadu challah board. Not everyone's taste, but we love it. They come in styles like these but have a challah knife that slides inside and the flip side is formaica for cutting.

I make a glass challa tray, that some use alternately as a tray for candlesticks.

It retails for about $80 in Israel. Shipping to the States is about $55

Not Barbara, I'm Karnash.

I'm a glass artist, and make these.
They can be stored as you would store any tray, flat or upright.
They're not lightweight, but not too heavy - intentionally, so that they will be durable. I have mine since I first designed them-about 4 years ago.

I was replying to BARBARA. That's why I wrote BARBARA. I was on mobile and can not quote in mobile.

To reiterate - Barbara - how heavy is that? how do you store it? It looks gorgeous and heavy! (and also expensive!)
