My DS is constantly complaining about a headache. He recently told me that he does not even mention it because it is just a part of him. He showed me that it is on his fore-head and going down the temples to the side of his face. I do not know if it is always there or it moves around.
I took him to a neurologist who said it was tension headaches and he needs a form of music or play therapy/art therapy. I did not end up sending him for therapy since his emotional issues calmed down.
Did anyone ever deal with this or hear about it. What sort of therapy does he need. Am I missing some information and can it be something else.
TIA

A few months ago my daughter was constantly getting headaches, usually in the same area around her left temple, and it turned out it was due to poor vision. She has glasses, but she needed a higher prescription, so she would strain to see things and that caused the headaches. As soon as I took her to the eye doctor and had the lenses adjusted, the headaches disappeared.

I know you already took your child to a doc, but just giving you another idea.

Thanks Obagys. I took him to an eye dr. and he needs a very low number. Because of that the doctor does not want to give him glasses since he said that once he gives it the numbers will just keep going up and he really does not need it . After a 1/2 year of the kid complaining, I took him to a different eye doctor (private specialist) and he agreed that there is no reason for him to be getting glasses.
Any other ideas??

I once asked the doctor about frequent headaches and was told to make sure the child is getting enough sleep and good nutrition.

From your description, it sounds like it might be a sinus infection.

Please take your child for a full physical, an opthamologist (not optometrist), and a neurologist. Chronic headaches can be caused by any number of things: sleep apnea, food sensitivities, allergies/sinus problems, eye problems, nueological probelms, etc.

Your child needs extra sleep, good nutrition, and I would recommend cutting out: msg, nitrates, sulfites, and food coloring. All are known headache triggers.

And if none of that pans out, I strongly recommend therapy (which is likely to be covered by insurance, at least for a good number of sessions per year). I'd want to know why a child of that age feels that he is under such pressure.

I went to two ophthalmologists, and a highly recommended neurologist. He does not have any tension that I can see. He is borderline adhd and is a competitive kid but not out of the range of normal. There is no reason that I can see that he should have and there is no reason for me to believe that he does have any pressures. The only reason why I mentioned the emotional aspect was because around a year ago he was very into being the best in everything, but that did calm down and he is within reason. He had vision therapy for a year and I saw no improvement with the headaches, though I thought it was better for a few months. I will try another neurologist, but now I need to find out some good child neurologist in Israel. I do not know how I will go about that.........
Thanks all for your ideas, I will see if it is a sinus, he currently has a cold, but it is not chronic. He sleeps around 10 hours a night, I try to put him in bed to sleep 11, but he does not like to go to bed so quickly. Any more ideas are welcome!!

I have constant headaches too! I feel like I have a sinus infection, but an x-ray showed that the throbbing pain wasn't an infection. I am going for a CT scan this week, because the doctor says its worth 100 specialists.

My ds who's 12 has constant headaches. We've ruled everything out and are left with that they have an emotional component. We're working on it for him now, but it's hard - he gets a headache whenever anything upsets him.

Try taking the glutamates out of diet - msg, autolyzed yeast, hydrolyzed yeast, tortulo yeast. Glutamates are flavor enhancers and are known headache triggers.

That means no bissli, no super snacks. Nothing flavored (ie ketchup flavored chips, onion and garlic popcorn, etc).

I can only say that in my case, I suffered from debilitating headaches for close to year. It ended up being that I was allergic to milk and I drank cupfuls of it while in sem (which is where I had the headache) with my cereal, and coffees, which I haven't done at home. Once I stopped drinking the milk, the headaches were gone. It basically made me get a sinus headache (congestion).

Aidelmaidel- honestly, I do not know what all of the above are.. embarrassed Out of the list of foods, the only thing he eats sometimes is ketchup. Bissli is a one off food and really nothing else. I will research your list and see if he eats anything else. Problem is he eats lunch in school and I do not know what they serve. Why the list though, what and how do those things effect?
Thank you, and thanks to all who are helping me here.

While there's a lot of "wooo" on this website, they do have a good list of foods that contain glutamates - which are flavor enhancers. http://www.msgtruth.org/avoid.htm

Ketchup is not necc a problem, it's things that are "ketchup flavored". Almost anything with artificial flavoring has a glutamate in it.

The fact that he is having these headaches is a very good reason for you to think that he has tensions that you don't know about. I would definitely double check with a good pediatric neurologist, opthamologist, dentist (teeth grinding / jaws clenched) and allergist, and look for things like anemia. But if the physical stuff does not check out, you simply can't dismiss the notion of stress headaches.

Foods that a person is senstive to can cause a variety of issues that one may not necessarily connect with the foods that they had eaten. The list that she provided is a few of the potential problem foods, but it certainly is not all inclusive - and it could be that those food happen to not bother your ds. Basically, the more real the food is the less likely it is to cause a problem; however, that does not always work - as my kids can't have dairy, nuts, gluten, corn, and so on - and that didn't even touch the bad guys (flavor enhancers, msg, food coloring, preservatives, diet sugars).

When I said that my ds has headaches daily, that's after the removal of all of his sensitivities.

I agree. I would insist on a CT scan.
I don't mean to worry you, but..................................Chronic headaches are something to worry about, please don't ignore them thinking its an allergy!

Why don't you ask the neurologist if he can perform an EEG or VEEG (in video form) - measures brain electrical activity over the course of a couple of hours.
