As a spin off of the recent baby formula threads - In the event that a mother cannot breastfeed (medically or otherwise) how can she find out the pros and cons of different baby formulas. Personally I breastfeed my babies and top up with formula here and there. I'm due in another few weeks and with all the controversy I'm getting confused. How can I make an informed decision?

There is a significant difference between dairy and soy formula so dairy is preferable. Anything else is just hype. Adding DHA has not made a difference in outcomes and may cause harm.
Buy the cheapest formula--store brands are usually identical to name brands anyway.
To avoid needing formula, find a good support group, counselor, or lactation consultant. Most problems can be prevented with good management.

My ds was allergic to breast milk. (he was put on elecare)
Anyhow if you have to give formula first give milk based, if he doesnt tolerate do soy, if he doesn't tolerate you should go to a GI and they will help you make an informed decision about what you should be giving. Also, talk to your ped. about it, mine went thru all the kinds of formula and how they are made, pros and cons to each kind...
