Then can ask if you are taking maternity leave in the near future.
Then can ask you if you are pregnant if you will be working after your baby.
They can ask you how many times a year you take vacation.
There are just so many appropriate things they can ask

No, you're not. Except for maternity leave. The rules are different depending on where you are, but I know that in Israel the law says you have to notify your employer by the end of your 5th month.

I don't think that an employer can legally ask you your age.

When I was engaged and looking for a job, I didnt tell them and one person found out and told me I was dishonest for not telling her.

Turns out I didnt want the job anyway, but it isn't pleasant to be told that you are dishonest especially if legally I didnt have to tell.

They can't ask you many questions legally, but if you refuse to answer, many employers will look askance.

I went for an interview yesterday and was asked my age, whether my baby was my first, if we hoped to have more. For the "hoped to have more" question I answered yes, we do, but I'm unable to tell you when. I got the job. Then today they called back and said, by the way, you were in a tichel yesterday, we'd prefer to see you in a hat or sheitel when you come to work. ???

I dont see a problem with that. A tichel is known to look "shlumpy". I'm surprised that you went for an interview in one.

It depends on how you do it up. I look better in a tichel than in a hat, and I'm more comfortable. It had nothing to do with how I looked, it had to do with the fact that the head office is in California and whoever heads it up isn't entirely comfortable with a headcovering at all.
