I took my daughter for a routine eye exam by an ophthalmologist yesterday and he suspects a torn retina. She was asymptomatic, and we went because she is very myopic (-8.5) and it was recommended by our optician.
The doctor is sending us to the ER (he told us to wait until this morning so that senior doctors would be on staff) and said that it is a very routine very simple laser procedure to correct this.
I am trying to stay calm and confident but I am worried. Will this reoccur? Will it affect her vision? Should I hold out for a specialist?
Anyone have any experience in this area?
Thanks!

Outcome depends on the tear, size of tear & how close it is to the macula. Yes, I would hold out for the specialist. Maybe the senior Dr. that you were told to wait for is the specialist? Retinal specialist or pediatric opthamologist? Should be an Opthamologist.
Yes, it is a frequently performed surgery.
Retinal tearing is not unusual for those w. high myopia, since the retina is thinned by the shape of the eye.
Refua Shelama. It should be a successful surgery & speedy recovery.
