Which menora? I take it not in his Jewish neighbour's house. big deal - who thinks it is a mitzva, just a populist ploy. So he's lighting candles somewhere.

My guess is that he'll be on vacation when the real Chanukah falls out... and because he wanted the photo-op.

OK, so he won't get his collection of rabbis but there are Jews in Hawaii, including the happiest man in the hemisphere, Mr. Wong. (Though perhaps he won't want to invite Mr. and Mrs. and risk the inevitable backlash of two Wongs, etc.)

I agree.

Of course that's the reason. Duh.

Many Jews (I would venture to say they are largely among the non-observant Jewish population) view such displays of ecumenical posturing as positive. "Yay -- an official display of acceptance by the POTUS. We are so blessed."

Id be more impressed if he donated to a jewish cause, treated the prime minister of Israel with more respect, or pardoned Pollard.

then he would have my vote.

for now its Romney or Gingrich whichever wins.

see how fickle I can be :-)

Actually, we should be saying how disrespectful it was of George W. Bush, who established the precedent for lighting a menorah at the White House. Rolling Eyes

"The first president to host an official White House Hanukkah party, and the first to actually light a menorah in the White House residence, was George W. Bush, beginning in both cases in 2001."

Since 1979, the White House has been represented at the lighting of a national menorah in celebration of Hanukkah, beginning with the attendance of President Jimmy Carter in the ceremony in Lafayette Park. In 2009, both White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger lit the menorah. Additionally, beginning with President Bill Clinton in 1993, a Hanukkah menorah was lit in the Oval Office of the White House, and in 2001, President George W. Bush began the annual tradition of a White House Hanukkah Party in the White House residence, which includes a menorah candle lighting ceremony.

So all Obama is doing is what every president in most of your lifetimes has done. But gee, let's bash HIM, because, after all, he is Obama.

I've always thought it was a combination of well-meaning + self-serving + stupid.

The proportions between these three descriptions may shift from president to president.

The governator? Whoa, talk about irony.
