I think my son would benefit from social skills training, but don't have resources to pay private. He was evaluated by department of Ed and had a counselor. Unfortunately, my son gained next to nothing, and lost class time with that person.
His issues are that a) he is very impulsive, b) he doesn't understand to ask once or twice and let go - he harrases, c) he has anger issues, d) boundaries are also difficult for him.
what should he be evaluated for? Where do I start other than pediatrician?
We are in Brooklyn and he is 12 years old. TIA

You should get a recommendation from the school for a psychologist who does neuropsych evaluations. The psychologist will speak to the parents, teachers, and child, and determine what to evaluate for- you don't need to tell her. Based on the results of the evaluation, you will get specific recommendations in terms of how your child can best be helped.

#1 THANK YOU FOR ANSWERING
He had an evaluation with the board of Ed about 2-3 years ago- should I request a new and specific one or that's that?
jelly-belly He goes to a chassidish school which isn't on top of these things. How can I find such psychologist if not through the school?
I saw in the summer anger management group advertisement for his age, I would have to pay $250 in addition to what my insurance pays. I can't afford that. Not sure if it was Etza- toshia.
Again thank you for responding, keep it coming.

You should get a new eval if it has been 2-3 years.

Unless you absolutely can't afford to go private, I wouldn't do it thru the bd of ed. You can start a new thread here asking for recommendations in your area if you don't think the school has someone to refer to. Check with them first though.

Your health insurance may pay for a social worker or child psychologist for these issues, speak to your pediatrician.

What was your child categorized as by the board of health? What area did he qualify for in services?
Here is a listing of special education service agencies in NY for Jewish people.

Maybe you can find the most relevant agency in this listing.

There is a great sensory gym in Brooklyn with phenomenal OT therapists. And you can get paid transportation from the BoE, to and from the center.

Your son needs a new evaluation by a neuropsychologist, the most broadly trained professional. The difficulties you mentioned in your op are common to quite an array of conditions and only a broadly trained professional is qualified to make a differential diagnosis. If you go to an OT, she will find OT issues. If you go to an ADHD specialist, she will find ADHD, a social skills coach will find social issues, etc. You need a professional trained to look for all behavior and neurological conditions and determine differentially which it is and which it isn't. Only then can you determine what remediation services he needs. Good luck!

you ladies are wonderful, thank you.
Can I just call up a referral agency for the neuropsychologist or I need to be referred by school/pediatrician? Is there a specific agency that's better for these issues?
