first of all, never ever clean anyone's ears with q-tips. It is a horrible invention that is really really bad for you. (My sister who is studying to be a speech therapist said it was likened to using a broom to bang on the ceiling, chipping away slowly.)
Do you see where the bleeding was coming from? was it deep in the ear or in the area you can reach with a finger?
On the outside you can clean the blood away gently with a wet tissue or something. If the bleed is coming from deep inside maybe get it checked out?

I have actually always wondered how to clean my kids (and even my own) ears without a q-tip. Sometimes my kids' ears are really waxy and yucky!

I agree with kalsee. My doctor told me also that you should NEVER clean out your ears with a ear bud, it is dangerous.
There are things you can buy in the store to get out ear wax or ask your doctor to remove it.

I would take my child to the pediatrician.

My GP said never use anything smaller than your elbow to clean your ear... obviously an exaggeration but you get the point...never ever use them for children and be extremely careful when using them for yourself - I know someone who almost perforated her eardrum because she was walking as she was cleaning her ears and tripped and jabbed it in. For my kids, if it's close enough to the outside that I can clean it with my nails, fine, otherwise it stays where it is.
For now I would watch the child see if they complain of pain or clear fluid leaks out (a perforated ear drum leaks clear/opaquish liquid). You could use a warm washcloth or cotton pad to clean the blood near the outside but leave the rest.
