My baby is spitting up like crazy and very fussy, the ped. recommended similac alimentum. I noticed it doesn't have an OU. is it ok to use anyway? or is there a kosher alternative?
Thanks!

I don't want to contradict your doctor's advice, but: I started out nursing DD #2. She threw a strike. She went onto soy formula and had a problem. She went onto milk and had a problem. (By problem I mean her cheeks got very red, she had this minor, but constant diaper rash -- cried the second she pished for a change -- and very dry skin).

Doctor said to go to Alimentum. The issues mostly cleared up but not all the way and she developed HORRIBLE acid reflux that wasn't helped by the medication that was prescribed for it.

I went back to a mix of the soy and milk based formulas because I felt that was the lesser of two bad options.

Accidentally, I tried a different milk-based formula (this one: http://www.target.com/p/Simila.....utton) and she has had NO problems whatsoever. She's been on it for just over a month.

I have looked at the ingredient labels and cannot figure out what the difference is there, so it must be in the way that the ingredients are processed. (Even Allimentum contains common allergens; it's just super processed).

Before you drive yourself nuts for no reason, see if a different (more 'regular') formula might help.

try "Elecare". it is certified by the OU even though the symbol is not on the can. It is derived from milk and so halachically it is milchig and needs an OUD. However, since it is for milk allergic babies, they don't want to put an OUD on it.

Alimentum has enzymes from a pig in it. I was told to use elecare or neocate.

Elecare and Neocate are kosher yet a lot more expensive. See if you could get it covered by WIC or insurance.

thanks for the replies. I will look into elecare.
allrgymama- we tried enfamil for acid reflux which looks like it is similar to similac sensitive (both have rice starch). baby doesn't go for it. we also tried similac sensitive. is your baby on medicine for acid reflux? im trying to figure out if the milk is bothering my baby or the reflux.

We had a great experience with elecare, too. It is kosher but I don't believe there's a hechsher on the cans. When we used it is was by prescription only and very expensive, so see if you can find a clinic that stocks it and if you can have wic cover it.

She had to be on medication for acid reflux when on the Allimentum, but is fine on the other formula (just the occasional spit-up).

Though my doctor recommended the Allimentum, I physically could not watch my baby be in that much pain. It was horrifying; she went from eating 6 oz a feeding to barely two and she wouldn't eat those nicely at all. She screamed and kept pulling her feet into her stomach -- typical acid reflux indicators.

I felt that the diaper rash and dry skin were less of a problem. Baruch Hashem that it worked out for us.

my ds was on neocate. It's not kosher but when ds was on it, our Rav called up and it was made from plant extracts, plus it was a health thing and rav said it was ok.
