Did you cook the meatballs before or you added them raw to the crockpot and just cooked on low?

the recipe sounds so interesting - I would probably boil water, add it to the crockpot and then add the meatball mixture - so that the outside would cook immediatly and retain the meatball shape....

I add the meatballs raw. They retain their shape.

oh, and to keep meatballs soft...add plenty of egg to the mixture and caffeine in the cholent...a tbsp of instant coffee, is a great meat tenderizer. I use it on pot roast.

I never heard of that !

You can make crockpot meatballs in a tomato based sauce for supper, by cooking it on LOW for 8 hours.

I normally make cholent with whole wheatberries and they come out great. Doesn't get mushy. Though I suggest you soak it overnight first.

What can I use instead of teriyaki sauce? I am stuck without meat - only chopped meat and it is the middle of the night here!

You can use soy sauce seasoned with a dot of garlic powder and sugar.

I like to make ra_mom's brown rice stew with meatballs instead of meat. It comes out delicious!

sticky brown rice stew

-1 cup short grain brown rice (must be short grain, otherwise rice will "bust")
-1/2 onion, chopped
-2 garlic cloves, crushed
-2 tsp salt
-1 tsp teriyaki sauce
-1 piece meat
-4-1/4 cups water (use only 3 cups water if placing stew in a crockpot liner bag)

Place all ingredients in crockpot, with meat on top.
Cover and cook on LOW for a little less than 24 hours.

I make my regular meatball recipe:
1 lb. chopped meat
1/4 cup flavored bread crumbs
1 egg
1 tsp. onion powder

Bumping this up as I'm looking for some new meal ideas. What kind of meat do you use? Do you use a roast or can I use beef stew meat? Also roughly how much meat do you put in (how many pounds)? And lastly can this be made with chicken instead of meat? Thanks.

I use a chunk of chuck meat (no meatballs).
About a pound. 1 big piece of meat comes out more tender than stew meat.
If you're serving this dish as your full meal you can add more meat.
