My Rosh Hashana guests are coming back. For all you ladies who aren't in the kitchen tonight - any ideas what I can make for the first course? I usually do a melon salad in sauce, but hate to serve the same thing to guests just 2 weeks later!
Looking for a light starter, as we have heavy chicken & meat later on in the meal and I hate to fill everyone up on salmon or fish.
Maybe a fruity drink or something? Any ideas?

I like to serve soup in the sukka since it can be cold.

Or a green salad with very small portions of smoked salmon.

Or fruit soup.

Yeah maybe ambrosia, or maybe just various store bought salads like hummus, marinated eggplant, etc. you know, I just serve one course on yom tov - meat with a salad and a side. Plus dessert. Why do people need so much food? They'll be full with or without a starter, might as well save yourself money and time. You can just add another side dish at worst.

some ideas:

vegetable soup
chicken soup
fruit soup
lettuce salad with small chunks of salmon/ grilled chicken/ fruit

enjoy zman simchaseinu, stay relaxed and happy, try not to stress over the food. in fact, you do not need a starter if you dont want to. I hope it is not blasphemous to say taht you could go right into the main course!

I hear the fruit idea, but I know some people who are either allergic or just dont like fruit.
I'm doing for one meal potato knishes with mushroom sauce or mustard. And the other I am making personal sushi salads with two sauces.

That's funny. I don't like to serve soup since it is very HOT. I can't even imagine worrying that it might be too cold!

How about a deli or grilled chicken salad?
