I used to watch NYPD blue one of my favorite shows ever. I know if I start at the last season I would be missing so much of the nuances.
I would love to watch csi or similar shows but their are so many seasons would I have to start at the beginning? If I start this season would I get the relationships? It seems overwhelming to start at season 1 when they are at season 10. A

If you don't want to watch all seasons, I would watch at least the first season to see how it starts, and then move ahead to a later season.

Another sci-fi recommendation:

FARSCAPE!

Season 1 is currently on hulu, and I am going NUTS because neither hulu nor my library have the later seasons! This show is AWESOME sci-fi -- it's way more self-aware and genre-savvy, so the characters do more unexpected things instead of the typical sci-fi plots. Lots of moral ambiguity and times when you HATE the main characters, even though you understand their decisions... lots of character growth for everyone, together with brilliant acting, writing and production values. Oh, and did I mention Muppets? It was made in association with the Jim Henson company to get some truly alien-looking aliens as main characters, not just humanoids with pointy ears or funny foreheads.

Highly recommended!!

For comedys -"Up all night" & "Guys with kids" they are on the NBC network.
