Do not give your child melatonin!

If you need something, stick with something like chamomile tea or tincture. It really helps.

I give Dr Reckeweg's R14 Junior (a tincture that includes the herbs chamomile and valerian).

Oh, I recall that my mother told me she's been using "sleepy time tea" (has chamomile and I think also valerian in it) and it's working for her. I don't know if it's kosher, however. Something to check as it is definitely safe.

Melatonin is a synthetic hormone, and while is isn't addictive, it does cause a child to be dependent on it, unable to fall asleep on his own without taking a dose first.

My pediatrician was very anti it when I asked him. He said there isn't enough studies on it to safely give to children. Btw: The article posted is excellent

I've only heard of parents using it on special needs kids. I can't believe a woman is using it on 9 children. (!!!!!)

Drs prescribed thalidomide too, not everything a dr says is correct.

Melatonin is actually an amino acid, which affects the seratonin in the brain.

I would never use an amino acid supplement on a child.

It is not FDA regulated and ime using amino acids, there are definitely side effects. I started to develop glaucoma due to one.

It is very difficult for the body to cope with an excess of an amino acid. It isn't like an herb that can more easily just be peed out. And amino acids are affecting the brain, as well. Once you start messing with brain chemicals...you're in a danger zone.

There are much simpler, just as effective, safer things to try. As someone who had PTSD and sleep startles, I can tell you that the herbs do work. B"H I am over the PTSD for the most part, and at most, I have to drink a little chamomile or take my DD's R14 drops.

If the child takes 2 hours to fall asleep at night, then you are absolutely right about giving something. Please, try the R14, or any product that has chamomile or valerian, or both.

Many of today's young parents don't visit pediatricians regularly, and they visit the health food stores after seeing the huge ads. I would think ten times before giving my kids any medication, or any "healthy" supplement. I hardly even use supposedly safe things like tylenol.

I am not referring to children with special needs, who may need help falling asleep.

There are exceptions to every rule, but even special needs kids need caregivers who give them healthy nourishing food and try to do things in a more natural way, without chemicals and supplements.

Normal parenting includes many sleepless nights, children who hate going to bed or have a hard time falling asleep or staying asleep, and even parents who still hate to sleep.....

For a mother of 9 kids giving out the daily dosage, I shudder to think what else is happening with those kids. They for sure have far bigger problems.....

I know many families with a dozen kids and they would never use the stuff....their kids all sleep more or less.

But with all the evidence, doctors should not encourage this easy way out, and try to tell mothers not to use it, for sure not steadily.

And the only person that I know who gives it to her children has 5 children and a few of them take it and lets just say she is drowning in her life. One of her children was either 3 or 4 when she started giving it to her.

My 8 yr old dd gets a 1/4 mg every night. I ran this by her pediatrician, 2nd opinion leading Mount Sinia pediatrician and her psychiatrist. They all said it was absolutely safe. I felt good. Now, I'm not so sure.
Chani8, do you mind elaborating on R14, what is it? Where can I find?

If you've talked it over with several doctors and specialists (which is what it sounds like you've done), then I'd say you can relax and think it's warranted in your case. If you're concerned or want to try something else, you can always ask them. I think that most of us who are warning against it are bothered by people casually buying it over the counter and giving it to kids as if it were just another chewable vitamin - which is definitely something that happens.

Malatonim should be used as a last resort only. Even then, give the lowest dose that works. I did a lot of research on it and the final result-there is no evidence at all that there are long term side effects. There are a lot of special kids that need it since they're lacking the sleep hormone that makes the child fall asleep called malatonim. I give it two my kids because like me-they cannot fall asleep. If they don't get it-especially one son, he will still be up at one am or later. I don't give it on the weekends because we go to sleep at one or later anyways and want his body to get a break. Some nutrisionists say give it a break every third night. I have tried at least ten things that are more "natural" that had zero effect(besides in my wallet).I also didn't give on succos break so they had a good few days to let it flush out-or whatever.

First of all, please do discuss specific concerns with your healthcare providers. There are risks and benefits to any medication and your doctor who you can talk to about your situation and your questions will help you evaluate whether using this makes sense for your kid.

Second, supplements (unlike prescription medications) are largely unregulated in this country. As a consumer you really don't know what is in them. Please ask your healthcare provider (or, if they are not sure, see if you can contact a naturopathic provider) about which brands or products they recommend as being high quality and reliable.

That makes sense. Thanks for your response.
