I am almost sure that the cs at the end is actually pronounced "ch" as in at the end of "catch". I think it is hungarian because my father's mother is hungarian so our surname is the same as hers and it is pronounced similar

There was a famous American comedian, Ernie Kovacs. Pronounced KO-vax.
I also grew up near a Kovacs family. KO-vax.
If OP pronounces it that way, she at will not look silly, even if the person she is addressing uses a non-standard pronunciation.
