Cake mix works great. I've also used pancake mix - yummy.
BTW, I bring along a sandwich maker on vacation, and we make cake and pancake triangles in it.

Do you modify the recipe at all to make it less liquid-y?

I'm surprised it could work ... then again I don't use boxed cakes - nor do I have a doughnut maker

We had Dunkan Hines Devil Food cake donuts, made by my daughter in our donut maker on the first night of Chanukah. They actually worked quite well B"H. All were happy. She mixed it up just like the box said to to make a cake.
