I'm having bookshelves for sefarim built. Is there anything special I should request? I was thinking about doing cabinets on the bottom for children's books.
Does anyone have any suggestions that might be useful for me?

Get a reinforced shelf for the gemaras (if you are planning to put a set of full size gemaras on the bookshelf).

I like the look of cabinets on the bottom, but ime, if the kids books are behind doors one of two things happen: either the books go ignored, or the doors quickly end up off-hinge.
we had shelves built, we put in a couple of drawers too, we keep dh's tallis/tefilin in there, things like that.
and kind of obvious and I'm sure you've already done this but just incase, be sure to measure your tallest/widest sefer and make sure the shelf will be big enough.
