Freelancer raising rates, do I have to give notice?

I want to raise my rates effective April 1st. I have some pretty consistent clients, but I'm still a freelancer. They can stop using my services at anytime, without notice (though it would be nice). Do I have to give more notice than 2 weeks that I'm raising my rates?

I think that it would be the right thing to do.

I would actually give notice earlier rather than later (e.g. consider waiting till 1.5 and notifying now). This gives them time to digest the news and also "get a bargain" by still getting you at your old rates for a little while longer. When I put up my rates I wrote to my clients that new clients were already paying this rate (it was true) and I had waited as long as possible before raising it for them.

Hmmm... I already wrote to one of my "regulars" that it's effective Apr. 1st. I'll write May 1st to rest of them.

you're a freelancer - do whatever feels good to you ...

when I go grocery shopping they don't warn me ahead if they mayo went up or the ounces of tuna went down ...

each time you rent a car - there's a new price

the post office won't let your mail go through if you didn't know the rates went up

so next time they book you - let them know the prices went up
