At what age do most children learn to clean themselves after having a bowel movement? My daughter recently turned 5 and I would like for her to start doing it on her own but not sure she is old enough to get herself cleaned properly (and since she has very sensitive skin I don't want her constantly getting a rash). Also any tips/ideas on how to teach her would be useful.

I think that by the age of starting school it would seem necessary for a child to know how to wipe themselves after using the bathroom. You can also explain that if it itches there in the back, then it's probably not wiped well enough and in that case you use a wet tissue or babywipe and wipe there again. Also teach front to back for a girl.

5ish is a good age ... but you should have wipes for them & also check afterward for a quick clean so they don't go dirty ... until they get the hang of it

When they turn five I get them flushable wipes and teach them to wipe themselves. After a few days with practice they end up getting it. That is a good age to teach them.
