My 7 yr old son complained on and off for a couple of weeks that his ankle hurts. I asked if anything else, and he said no. Bh, strep was not an issue in my family and I didnt think to link the two. I dont think any of my kids had strep in the last couple of years.

Last week he complained of throat pain and he had a slight limp. His rapid and overnite culture was negative. My ped took blood and he says, my son has antibodies to strep and is giving him strong antibiotics. Im confused. How are these 2 linked? He said something about pandas. Anyone can help me out here??? Im also concerned about rhuematic fever. Please enlighten me. Thanks.

You can have strep without ever having symptoms. It can show up in a variety of ways, but the way to find it is through a blood test - cultures will come back negative. Some kids will suddenly develop crazy behavior issues. Others can have stomach aches, some can develop rheumatic fever/heart disease. Pandas are these developed behaviors - it can be OCD, hair pulling, tics, or anything really. Hopefully you caught it in time, and once you kick the infection, he will not have any longer lasting issues. Even kids who do get pandas, once they kick the infection and get treated for the behavior issues, there is not necessarily a reason to believe he will have any long lasting issues from it, unless you see issues.

That happened to me when I was 12. I knew I had strep because my knee hurt and my knees always hurt when I got strep, dr didn't believe me so he did a blood test and it was positive.
