I ask because I always thought we were SUPPOSED to eat dairy. Then I find out most people do nights milchiks, day fleishiks. Then I talked to people this week who only do fleishiks because of basser b'yayin. So which is it? And can you tell me a source because I am super curious now.

Thanks

theres no halacha afaik.

theres a minhag to eat dairy.

theres an inyan (as with all y"t and shabbos) to eat bassar vyayin (tho some say fish counts as basar and then no prob to have milchigs and fish).

we usually have a milchig kiddush and the seudos (all 4) are fleish.

Like every chag, many people are makpid to do basar as brought down by the rambam and by later sources as well. According to those sources, one fulfills the mitzvah of being bsimcha on the chag through the consumption of meat and wine. There is a minhag to eat dairy, but not specifically at the seuda. The seuda is a yom tov seuda.

However, there are also sources that say dairy is fine for the seuda. So people who do this have something to rely on as well.
