Several posters have used these words incorrectly in the past week. I don't want to pick on any one of them, but it is driving me bonkers.

SNOB. Noun.
1. a person who imitates, cultivates, or slavishly admires social superiors and is condescending or overbearing to others.
2. a person who believes himself or herself an expert or connoisseur in a given field and is condescending toward or disdainful of those who hold other opinions or have different tastes regarding this field: a musical snob.

You cannot "snob" someone, although you can act snobbishly.

SNUB. Verb.
1. to treat with disdain or contempt, especially by ignoring.
2. to check or reject with a sharp rebuke or remark.
3. to check or stop suddenly (a rope or cable that is running out).
4. to check (a boat, an unbroken horse, etc.) by means of a rope or line made fast to a fixed object.
5. to pull up or stop abruptly in such a manner.

Snub can also be used as a noun or an adjective.

Honestly, I'm not usually the grammar police. I just find this misuse particularly grating.

Thank you, Barbara, for saving me the bother!

The word "snub" always makes me think of somebody either pinching or turning up his or her nose. Probably because a "snub" nose is a small, upturned one. Which came first, d'you think?

And if I could add my own pet peeve, (well one of them anyway..) which I see absolutely everywhere: it's free rein not free reign. (As in to give free rein to your employee to carry out a task for example.)
The expression is a reference to letting a horse loose from its reins and not to a monarch's unlimited power.

Sorry for hijacking but thank you for letting me get that off my chest. 😌

What makes me crazy is this:

"I would like to loose 5 lbs on this new diet. "

Anyone else notice this all the time on this forum? It drives me insane! !

I don;t understand why anyone would want to "loose"
weight. Most of us would rather firm it up.

Barbara, I thought snob being used in place of snub was a yeshivishism I had not heard yet.

Advise is a verb

Thanks Barbara! I'm sure I make many mistakes and I really would appreciate other posters to correct me. Then again, half of the threads would probably look like school exams being marked... LOL
Maybe you can start a new thread, like English mistakes spotted in threads.

I've had Spanish speaking cleaning help use that term, so I guess it's more of a foreign language thing than anything else.

ITA. I woz like compleet ir8 wen I sow all dem bad snobs snubbing eech ovr 2 wind u up. Soz.

(This is sarcasm, for those who need it identifying.

I am in total agreement with my abovementioned colleagues in their frustration over the poor language and grammer skills of today and wonder whether the richness of expression inherent in written English is being inadvertently displaced by the use of text speak and similar written verbal contractions.

My father frequently reminds me that verbal means "using words", and does not have the same meaning as "oral", meaning spoken words, despite being seemingly interchangeable in common parlance. Needless to say, he is a lawyer, although not a yekke.)

Misplaced apostrophes. (Its vs it's)
Plurals do not get an apostrophe before the s.

Also mixing up too and to. Big pet peeve of mine.

I see my two biggest challenges are on this list. I consider myself pretty competent in the use of the English language, and am pretty familiar with spelling, grammar and punctuation use. But when I am typing fast I often find myself interchanging loose and lose (and yes, I do know which is which) and advice and advise! I make it a point to try to proofread my posts before posting, and despite that I often find these mistakes in my posts embarrassed embarrassed . If you see any of my posts which have been edited, I can almost guarantee that one of those 4 words is somewhere in the post and I found a mistake after posting.

I really can't figure out why this happens to me all the time!

(And I must say, "post pardum" does drive me absolutely crazy, and I also thought that using snob as a verb must be some new slang that I'm not familiar with.)
