I'm reading a biography on Rav elyashiv and there is a picture of a yeshiva with a sign בית יהודא . Has anyone seen this before? Just curious.

I think it's Yiddish spelling. I think aleph is like the vowel A.

In Israel it spells always with a ה. Very chasidish might spell it with א. It is in Yiddish.

Lots of people spell it with an alef, so that if they leave out the dalet by mistake they won't end up writing the shem havaya.

Even if your brother spells it with an aleph, it does seem strange to imply that you've never seen it with a hey considering that is how it is spelled in the Torah. I assume that's why amother thought you might be joking when you sounded surprised that some people spell it the way it is spelled in Chumash.

Although I also don't understand why someone needs to be amother to ask that.

its the yiddish spelling. there were chasidish rebbes who used to spell it like that, I think because of shem hashem.

not just in israel. This is the first time im actually hearing of spelling it with an aleph. Thats only in yiddish. Any place in the world that it is spelled in hebrew it is with a hey.

I know many chassidish people with that name and no, they don't spell it with an alef.
Interesting, I thought it was always spelt with a hey.

Because of ahem hashem you spell it like that but regular on legal documents. Ever heard of yud-vuv-daled-aleph?

shock Why would anyone spell it with an Alef? its in the torah with a hey, thats the correct spelling . my name ends in a yod-hey. I was taught in school to make a slash after the yud. a rav told me what I was doing was wrong, and I should always useca yud-hey. there is nothing wrong with having shem hashem in your name. in fact for many it is a plus. if your spelling yehuda with an alef, you should be speaking to a rav.

It may be safe to assume that pumpernickel is Chassidish and has never studied chumash "inside" I.e. from a Chumash.

That being said, plenty of non-Chassidish native Yiddish speakers spelled it as it is spelled in the Chumash.

Yuda might be a yiddish name, hence spelled with an aleph. Yehuda is biblical-- hey at the end.

Many people are very careful not to create shaimos, so come to think of it, יהודא makes no sense. יודא is the only way to get away with it. AFAIK, there is no name יודא, it is a nickname for יהודה.
