I can't believe this wasn't mentioned: time management
We had a course in seminary that focused on how to manage several chores/projects/tasks at once. Like you can start a load of laundry, then set up something in the oven and wash dishes while it's baking and then you can deal with the laundry. I think it's a very important life skill even not in the kitchen.
Driving wouldn't have worked by us because our school has a no driving policy until graduation.
I second Dolly's idea of food safety. My friend tells me she thaws a frozen raw chicken on her counter before leaving work and when she comes home it's ready to use - EWWWWWW. Or my sister's friend who wonders why she and her family often have stomach bugs - my sister pointed out to her that you can't wipe your raw chickeny/meaty hands in the towel which is then used to wipe dishes and wipe wet hands. People need to know how to check for doneness of foods, how to properly store foods, what temperatures are safe for cooking at.
