So far our vacationing plans didn't happen for various reasons.
I randomly found good tickets to chicago and have a few friends there. Trying to get dh to go for it for the fam vacation.
He thinks there's nothing to visit in Chicago.
So Chicagoans- floor me. Help me convince him why we should go there.
Or should we not?

Who would be coming? How old are your kids? What's your budget?
Chicago has many nice museums, the museum of science and industry, the field museum, the shedd aquarium, the Adler planetarium, kohls children museum, botonical gardens, Lincolnpark zoo (free+parking), peggy notbart nature museum, Brookfield zoo, Sears tower viewing windows.
What other kind of things interest you? There's lots of nice free parks.

Tons of museums like BusyDev said. Navy Pier is a great place to go, skokie lagoons for boating/kayaking, plenty of kosher restaurants. Lots of good things for all ages!

What kind of things do you enjoy doing?
Chicago is not the most exciting place, but there's plenty to do for sure.

First off there are kosher places to eat, both milk and meat, something important in vacation,
Second if you've never been here you won't be bored.
Besides for all the museums there's six flags and 2 other mini parks for the younger kids, lots of arcade type places with rides-go karting, laser tag, etc that the teens and tweens like. There are beaches (don't insult our Lake Michigan beaches)

There's boating and biking and hiking, anyone say museums? Sightseeing.

And the weathers been great so far this summer.

Don't try it. Just came back from a Chicago visit and the traffic is just awful. Getting from the museum to a restaurant took over an hour. The hotel to an attraction an hour an a half. The kids were cranky and husband was no better! Look for a less-city-like atmosphere where you can just go where you want to go without an insane amount of traffic jams.

Thanks
2 kids (make tht 3 including dh :p ) LOL
We LOVE science museums but due to kohain issues we've been quite cautious about entering them these days.
We also love beautiful nature but not sure what there is in that category close by.
We need some activities to keep toddler entertained.
We like doing something exclusive to the region we're in (as opposed to going to the mall-which u can do anywhere, for example.)
Museums sound cool- if they're good.
Dh loves factory tours if there are any nearby.
We don't like to spend tons in restaurants but if groceries are fair priced we can take care of the food on our own.
But if there is a really good one recommended we would eat out once or twice.
We don't love traffic.....(Ouch,right?)
We like minyanim and communities where its chilled out and colorful but torahdik.
Hmmmm- not sure what else.
Where do locals vacation locally when they want to take a close by trip?

Definitely check the crc list of museums kohanim can't go to. Quite a few of the museums here are not good for kohanim. Traffic can be horrible, but timing is everything. There is a science museum further away that's good. There is also Volo car museum which is really cool. You can also do boating. There is a children's amusement park Pirates Cove that's not too far and real fun for the kids. Buying kosher food for prep is not a problem.

This list was circulated a while ago for things to do in Chicago , it is NOT updated so please call and check first before doing any of the activities .

Chicago is a world class city filled with culture , nature and fun ! The weather has been beautiful thus far and the people are very friendly .

Before we moved to chicago , we came here on vacation all the time and always enjoyed ourselves .

Wow, thanks for that list. As a local I'm sure it will help me with the kids off of school and camp.

As far as traffic is concerned, I would suggest you stay in the suburbs. Skokie has some hotels and lots of minyanim, food you can both buy and eat out, as well as an easy drive to lots of attractions.

There's the chicago botanic gardens, kohl children's museum, boating and nature trails all nearby.

You can go downtown one day for a trip if you want and Try not to go during traffic time.

Jelly belly is fun for kids and usually no traffic from the suburbs. You can also take a trolly ride and beach in kenosha. Take food along and make a picnic.
