For the past 2 -3 weeks ds has been making a sucking saliva noise with his tongue and teeth. At firsat he did not do it often and he said he was doing it because his tongue itched. Now he is doing it all the time, even in the middle of sentences. he is 8 years old- I don't want to make it worse by reminding him he is doing it, but I want to break him of the habit. I did check his tongue teeth mouth etc. all look fine. We have not introduced nay new foods so I don't think it is some kind of allergy.
Any ideas?

Check his anxiety level.

Ooze around and find out if anybody is hassling him in school or something, big kids on the block, difficulties with studies or people. Are there any new factors? New people, new situations?

Have his father spend some reassuring time with him.

OP here-That is a good thought, but actually it s just the opposite- there has been no camp and his siblings are all away at camp. Its just been the 2 of us doing camp mommy for the past few weeks.

Ah, everybody's off having funsies and he's left behind. Well, there you are.

He is bored stiff and amusing himself by making funny noises.

See if you can get more going for him to do, think about, build, see, climb on, bother, investigate, learn to use, or something.

Get some trips to Natural History museums and leave some serious money behind in the gift shop.

If that's hard, go to Edmund Scientific dot com, Starmagic dot com. Take him to the local hardware store and come back with stuff. Anything.

I know it's hard to tolerate, but ignore it. Chances are it'll pass soon enough. Might be boredom, you know. Try keeping him busy. Say nothing unless the habit persists past the beginning of school.

I question the wisdom of buying a solar firestarter for this age group...

No, no solar firestarter. Their items are coded by age group. The next link is to the sort for age 8.

This is the star magic I meant:

See if you can get some other Mommy Campers to meet up with. He needs his own size person around.

Actually, I wouldn't mind getting a solar firestarter for myself, just in case my electronic-ignition stove goes on the blink. Or they stop making matches, or something.
