Hi y'all,
For those of you that live in Lakewood can you please give me your honest opinion about the tow nand its neighborhoods?

Best: Someone summed it up for me as "the Lakewood brain drain" - every good service you can think of for your kids - OT, PT, Speech, therapy, tutors, etc - anything you can think of that you could possibly need - Lakewood has one. Need a yiddish speaking audiologist? There's one in Lakewood. Need a frum therapist who specializes in teenage girls with religious OCD? Lakewood has one. Need a self-contained 5th grade for a boy with X issue or Y issue, Lakewood has it. The town is well supplied with the needs of a growing frum population and very geared to the frum lifestyle. Need a particular type of skirt, a specialized snood, a gluten free upscale kosher restaurant menu? Lakewood has it, and for less than Brooklyn prices and with easy parking and access.
A lot of services around are also very understanding of our issues. The hospitals are culturally sensitive. The gyms. The auto mechanics! They make their money from frum people, so they make sure to accommodate what they can (and we DON'T appreciate enough!)
Best: for me, Yeshiva and the kollel lifestyle. But that's only if it applies
Best: Very good schools and committed excellent mechanchim.
WORST: Lakewood is very "box" oriented. You fit in with a "type" and you need to stick with your "type." Like if you are from the heimishe, more upscale "type" but you happen to have a daughter who would do well in a different type of high school, she's NEVER getting in. You need to stay in your box.
WORST: School admissions. Unless you are a zillionaire, a rosh yeshiva's grandson, or a first degree relative of the owner of the school, GOOD LUCK trying to get in. DON'T MOVE HERE UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT SCHOOL YOU ARE PLANNING TO SEND TO AND HAVE A GOOD CHANCE OF GETTING IN. Everyone gets in SOMEWHERE eventually, but if you have a certain school that you think is great for your kid, it's NOT gonna happen unless you have major pull.
Best and Worst: If you know what box you fit into to, and you move into that neighborhood and send to that school, you will be perfectly content. Me? I like having friends from all over, so that annoys me. Basically, I work hard at having friendships from outside of my particular "box" but I have to stretch myself. When I lived in Israel right after I got married, my friends in my apartment building were all sorts of "types" and I liked that much better.
That's what I can think of, offhand.
Good luck

Depends on WHICH rosh Yeshiva is your grandfather! What you really need to be is the zillionaire grandson of a rosh yeshiva who also is a first degree relative of the person who owns the school. Then you have a CHANCE.......

You said it great.

If I can add:
Worse: Traffic

You don't have to live in an area where everyone is the same box. Where I live there is a huge mix of people. Our minyan is made up of business men, doctors, electricians, rabbanim, people in kollel for 10+ years and a huge range of ages. It has a great balance. I realize you won't get this everywhere here, but it does exist.

I b'h got in recently to an amazing school - I'm so excited - and it is only because of the above. But it took until this week. so it does help, but still has lots of grief involved. The name wasn't a problem.

I don't blame the schools because they are maxed to capacity. It would be great if people could continue opening new schools. [I wish I could] I understand why schools don't want to expand to more classes if they aren't ready. Some of the schools we tried getting into had 30+ kids per class. It makes sense they couldn't take me. there is definitely a space issue.

but among the good: Almost every school in Lakewood is amazing, with wonderful dedicated teachers and principals. I would have been happy sending to almost every school. When speaking to the parent bodies of different schools while doing my research each one was like - my school has an amazing resource room, kriah specialists, etc. Every school seems to have really good programs.

In other words, you are a zillionaire rosh yeshiva's grandchild first degree relative of an owner of a school? You know, I have a daughter in shidduchim......JK Rolling Laughter

I think that people out of lakewood often only hear the bad things and they don't realize how AMAZING lakewood really is as far as everything that debsey said. The services for kids, the accomodations for frum poeple in any and every possible business venue, and just being a part of your complex, community, block etc.

One downside- NO TAKEOUT- if anyone is reading this from brooklyn and wants to start a good business-PLEASE make a takeout store in lakewood. WE NEED ONE. PLEASE

You can have this in Coventry and it's why my husband doesn't want to move even though we've been here for 6 years and are really well beyond living in a house that is falling apart like the one we rent happens to be.

And when we DO move, he wants to move with his melting pot of friends that he made here after we moved in.

Sure, I started out in Coventry too and it was GREAT! But I have 8 kids, including older high school kids. Coventry is a thing of the distant past. Fond memories, though........
