No negative comments, please. I'm not fully sure of the no-white-after-Labor-Day rule. Can my five year old son wear white shorts after Labor Day?

It's not such a hard and fast rule anymore. It really depends on the weather. If it's still summery, then summer clothing is still appropriate. Otherwise, not so much.

Yes, Virginia, your five year old can wear white shorts after Labor Day. The kid is five years old, not fifty. What, he won't get into medical school or be elected President of the USA because he wore white shorts in October when he was five? Fashion rules do not apply to children, even if those rules were enforced, which they haven't been in decades. Let the thermometer be your guide.

No way! That's a major fashion faux-pas.
Winter white pants are uber chic from November through March, though. Be sure they're wool, not cotton, though. Winter white tweed with a camel cashmere sweater is divine.

I put them on until it's no longer shorts weather. No way am I buying a different color shorts for the few weeks between labor day and fall starting.

I'm with Zaq here. The "rules" of "fashion"* do not apply to 5-year-old boys.
*On the subject of the so-called rules of fashion, I prefer to follow the wisdom of Oscar Wilde:

It really depends on the weather.
Nobody gets to make rules for you.
Personally, I don't buy white pants for my son. To easy to get them filthy.
