Roosevelt island is NOT a daytrip destination. It's largely residential with not much to do aside from the tram ride to get there (which is the main attraction) definitely go for governors island

Unless there has been some major change I don't know about, there is not much to do on Roosevelt Island besides ride there on the tram and check out the smallish new memorial. It has trees and nice views. You can bike around.

check out Governor's Island's website - there is much more to do for kids there, many frum people come there on Sundays. Even kosher food I think.

Governor Island has a kosher food truck by Shnitzi-great food and reasonable prices!
We had a lot of fun at governor Island! I don't know if I would come in from new Jersey for it!

Its fun to come in from NJ. Drive to the Staten Island Ferry-park free on Sundays. The SI ferry on the Manhattan side is right next to the Governor's Island ferry.
