I am hosting my first sheva brochos. What is appropriate to wear? Shabbos clothing? Nice clothing but not overly fancy? Can I wear a nice robe, or is it only for Shabbos?
I have seen a bit of everything and I don't want to make a faux-pas.

When is the sheva brachos?
Where is the sheva brachos?

I would say that a robe is a no-no, but depending on where/when it is you could wear anything from casual to very overly fancy.

It is in NY, in our apartment. As regards the timing, it will be in winter. I have seen casual to overly fancy, as well as a robe-like dress once, that's why I'm asking.

IMO

In your home:

If it's during the day, you could wear "better weekday"
At night you would want to wear Shabbos style or even fancier.

It will be at night. I don't have anything fancier than Shabbos style, so I guess I'll stick to regular Shabbos clothes. I would like to get something really fancy, but it is so expensive (in the Jewish stores)!

The reason I asked is because I have seen it IRL. Then again, I have also seen white gowns at chasunas, turbans and slippers at shul, and many other things I wouldn't do myself.

If you are the alta bubbe you can wear a robe Smile but really I wouldn't even wear a robe on a shabbes with people around so I'm not one to "get" robes.

A robe? Seriously? shock

You're the hostess. Dress like a lady. Nice clothing, shoes, makeup and hair.
No robes, snoods, sneakers or slippers.

Actually, I have seen robes that really look like dresses: mid-calf length, nice heavy fabric, decorated belt, etc. If it weren't for the front zipper, they would look like very fancy dresses.

Alright, so Shabbos style it is.
You'll look beautiful.
Yes, Jewish stores can be very expensive! Maybe it will go on sale (although... then it's just expensive instead of "very")

A nice Shabbat blouse with a skirt.
I'm sure if you look in tjmaxx or marshals you'll find.
Something elegant yet easy to wash

I think this really depends on the type of event that you are hosting, and as the hostess, you get to choose.

For example, when we hosted sheva brachos, we did a BBQ (it was summer, the chatan and kallah were casual people, and we didn't have enough space to do something indoors). Everyone wore jeans/denim skirts, T-shirts, sneakers, sandals, baseball caps, etc.

In general I would say Shabbos clothing, bit more on the casual side (not something you would wear to a wedding)
Try and think how the bride will dress. Is she more the casual type or the dressy type? Because you don't want to be dressed fancier than the bride
