I put it in my coffee this morning and it tastes good. Can I use it for the children cereal? Or for pasta sauce?

If it tastes good, it's fine. When it becomes bad, it tastes like cheese.

You may have already given it to them, but in the future, I would taste it plain first. I find that the taste of coffee sometimes disguising the taste of milk that is off or near off.

I wouldn't taste it. Not all harmful growth is noticeable by taste. Botulism, a very dangerous toxin, for example, has no taste.
