I LOVE this song
My dear Ima
I'm sending this letter
To say the things I've never said
from my impression
As your daughter
These thoughts are running
Through my head
As far back as I can remember
You said Shema with me at night
Each week I saw you welcome Shabbos
I saw your candles burning bright
You made our home a house of Torah
Encouraged Abba to learn each night
You stood beside him during hard times
You gave him strength in your own way
You taught us all about the mitzvos
Showed us the right way from the start
We always saw your love for Torah
You instilled it in our hearts
Now your children have grown older
And each one has gone their separate ways
But yet we still follow in your footsteps
You made us what we are today
Now your daughter is a mother
She does the things you used to do
Not only did you build your own home
But Ima, you built my home too

beautiful song...btw, it's "ecouraged Abba to learn each DAY" - that way it rhymes with "way" 2 lines later...

I know the second to last stanza as:
As your children have grown older
Each one has gone his separate way,
But they all follow in your footsteps -
You made us what we are today.
It's more grammatically correct.

I was just looking this song up, I remember it from Sternberg, the funny thing is that I thought the secular song with the same tune "One Tin Soldier" (Listen children to a story that was written long ago about the people on a mountain and the valley folks below...) was also a Jewish song, it's a really nice song with a great lesson, does anyone else remember learning that song in Sternberg? Or maybe I'm just confusing things because it was a while ago

I was in Sternberg a hundred years ago and the only version I remember is My Dear Ima, which I still sing periodically.
Do you also remember a really sad one, "Father's Telling Me a Story?" Still gets me.

I also went to Sternberg a hundred years ago! I remember My Dear Ima and I also remember Father's Telling me a Story. It IS a really sad song. Reminds me of my camp years - I loved Sternberg!

Didn't go to Sternberg but a bunch of my friends' did. I remember that song (if we're talking about the same one...)
Father's telling me a story
His arms around me tight
I feel secure and safe
once again it's Pesach night....

Yep, that's it. I sang it for my kids a while ago and they were horrified at how depressing it is. And I always loved it. Different generations...

My mother was pretty horrified by it when I sang it to her. Somehow in camp it didn't seem so depressing and we actually enjoyed it! I never sang it for my kids.
