Yep, that's it. I sang it for my kids a while ago and they were horrified at how depressing it is. And I always loved it. Different generations...

I think the refrain is more positive

"Erenu V'lo Ata" implies hope - that even though we don't have Mashiach yet, his time draws near....

But yes, the stanzas are really sad, can make you shudder to think of what our people have gone thru.

One of the few songs I can still play on the piano no matter how many years it's been...it is ingrained in my finger memory.

Smile now we need a spinoff for our finger memory. I think mine could almost play Abie Rottenberg's "Neshomeleh" with my eyes closed....

MY DEAR IMA I'M SENDING THIS LETTER
TO SAY THE THINGS I'VE NEVER SAID
OF MY IMPRESSIONS AS YOUR CHILD
THESE THOUGHTS KEEP GOING THROUGH MY HEAD.
AS FAR BACK AS I CAN REMEMBER YOU SAID SHEMA WITH ME AT NIGHT.
EACH WEEK I SAW YOU WELCOME SHABBOS
I SAW YOUR CANDLES BURNING BRIGHT.
YOU MADE OUR HOME A HOUSE OF TORAH
ENCOURAGED ABBA TO LEARN EACH DAY
NOT ONLY DID YOU BUILD YOUR OWN HOME BUT IMA YOU BUILT MY HOME TOO.

I actually did this on here a few years ago, so I just had to copy and paste:

Father's telling me a story
His arms around me tight
I feel secure and safe
Once again it's Pesach night
Suddenly a knocking
A sound I feared so long
The German guards are here
And my Abba is not strong

Erenu velo atah
I know the time draws near
When belief becomes reality
And all doubts disappear
Derech Kochav MiYaakov
Moshiach's Hashem's tool
Who will join us all as one
Yes that shining star will rule

I hold Mommy's hand so tightly
For we're without a home
There are so many victims
And yet I feel alone
A soldier's seen approaching
I reach for Mommy's hand
Now she's one of six million
And I don't understand

Erenu velo atah
I know the time draws near
When belief becomes reality
And all doubts disappear
Derech Kochav MiYaakov
Moshiach's Hashem's tool
Who will join us all as one
Yes that shining star will rule

He went off to join the army
To sacrifice his life
A chayal in the army
So we won't live in strife
Word came in this morning
Of a hero in the war
Death in a burning tank
Now my brother is no more

Erenu velo atah
I know the time draws near
When belief becomes reality
And all doubts disappear
Derech Kochav MiYaakov
Moshiach's Hashem's tool
Who will join us all as one
Yes that shining star will rule

He goes out to join his friends
From the window I peer out
See him remove his kippah
"Leave it on," I want to shout
I suppress my anger towards him
For I know who's to blame
By straying from Abba's words
I put out that Jewish flame

Erenu velo atah
I know the time draws near
When belief becomes reality
And all doubts disappear
Derech Kochav MiYaakov
Moshiach's Hashem's tool
Who will join us all as one
Yes that shining star will rule

The first stanza should be Spanish soldier. As I remember the song, it's a progression of bad things that have happened to us. It goes from Inquisition to Shoah to Israeli wars.

I LOVE this song

My dear Ima
I'm sending this letter
To say the things I've never said
from my impression
As your daughter
These thoughts are running
Through my head

As far back as I can remember
You said Shema with me at night
Each week I saw you welcome Shabbos
I saw your candles burning bright

You made our home a house of Torah
Encouraged Abba to learn each night
You stood beside him during hard times
You gave him strength in your own way

You taught us all about the mitzvos
Showed us the right way from the start
We always saw your love for Torah
You instilled it in our hearts

Now your children have grown older
And each one has gone their separate ways
But yet we still follow in your footsteps
You made us what we are today

Now your daughter is a mother
She does the things you used to do
Not only did you build your own home
But Ima, you built my home too

This is SO SO beautiful. Went right through my heart esp. the part - now your children have gone older and ...... and the last verse - WOW!!!!

First time I'm reading this song. Does anyone know who the composer is and I'd love to know the tune so that I can sing it. Can it be heard online under the composer's name???

I love the song - "THE LITTLE BIRD IS CALLING" by I think - Bracha Steinberg composed it like almost 30 years ago in camp

It starts off -

the little bird is calling
it wishes to be free
the little bird is ____
it cannot fly but__________

sorry I don't remember all the lyrics

beautiful beautiful beautiful

then it goes on to compare- the little bird is Yisroel
the vultures are our foes

ending -
the eagle's wings is Moshiach
whom we are waiting for

have any of u heard this song? know the lyrics?

on another note: is one allowed to post lyrics of a song online? Just asking if it isn't an infringement of copyright?

thank you and enjoy the other songs Smile

A little bird is calling, it wishes to return,
The little bird is wounded, it cannot fly but yearn,
It's captured by the vultures, crying bitterly,
"Oh to see my nest again, oh to be redeemed"

Lay lay la lalaly
La lay la lalaly
La lay la lalaly
La lay la lay lay

(I forget the second stanza, but this is what I have.
The little bird is
When will come the eagle, to set the little bird free)

The little bird is Yisroel,
The vultures are our foe,
The painful would is golus which we all feel and know,
The nest is Yerushalayim, where we yearn to be once more,
The Eagle is moshiach whom we are waiting for

Whenever we sang it in camp someone would always say tweet! tweet! During the chorus. Others would refuse to sing if anyone would insert the tweet! tweet!

The little bird of silver
So delicate and rare
Still chirps among the vultures
Outshining all that's there
How long, how long it suffers
How long will it be
When will come the eagle
And set the little bird free

I didn't quite catch what was said here:
is "Erenu v'lo Ata" and "Father hold me tight" one song or two songs?I've never heard of these songs, and would love to know them.

Me and music and singing are one spirit. I soar when hearing beautiful heart-tugging music and singing.

I guess I got it from my dear father z'l. He was a Levi. Had a beautiful voice. Always was asked to daven by the amud esp. on Rosh Hashonah and Yom Kippur, and people who heard him davening told me they were reduced to tears.

I'm the oldest and there's gap of several years before my siblings were born, so on Shabbos my father and I sang zemiros together. It was so beautiful. I sang regular, and he harmonized in various musical tones (not sure if 'tones' is the right word here)

I have a daughter who's like me in this, she's more musical then me and has ke'h a beautiful voice. Both can also harmonize.
As a girl we sang together at every opportunity, while preparing for Shabbos, wasing dishes, or just plain lounged on the couch and sang. Also by the Shabbos table esp. Shalosh Seudas.

My dd b'H got married 3 months ago and I really miss our singing together.

Actually when all my kids were home, before anyone was married;so I had little ones, tweens, teens ke'h: every Friday night after lecht bentshen we all huddled together on the couch arms around each other, and after davening Kabbolas Shabbos, we sang songs together. All the ages felt included, b/c I made sure that we also sang the songs the little ones learned in kindergarten, and so on up.

It was such a cozy, harmonious bonding, b'H.

I miss it, true, but b'H don't have it for good reasons - that most off my kinderlach have flown the nest - gotten married.

So so sorry that I waxed nostalgic and went off on a tangent....

Anyone else sing with their children?

anyone know the song of Sarah Schenirer?

In a little town in Poland
not so many years ago

that's about all that I remember in addition to the tune.

I think it goes on about a seamstress who sewed clothes, and she saw the ruchnius deterioration amongst the girls of that generation, and she thought how she wants to "sew" clothes for their neshamos....

thanks SO SO much "bluesclues" for starting this beautiful thread.
