what's difference btwn immersion blender and regular blender

what is the difference between an immersion stick blender and a stand blender that you pour the ingredients in?
can you make cheesecakes and drinks with an immersion blender?

I don't think there's much difference between an immersion blender and a stand-up blender as far as the resulting texture. The difference is where the items are that you are blending. If you want to blend fruit + yogurt + milk + ice, for example, for a shake or smoothie, it makes sense to throw it into a stand-up blender. If you are blending sweet potato soup, it makes sense to lower an immersion blender into a soup pot.

I don't think the immersion blender I have (or any that I've heard of) could withstand blending ice for a milkshake/smoothie. But an immersion blender works just fine for soups, vegetable purees, cheesecake, dips, etc. The immersion blender is also MUCH easier to clean. If both are in the budget I'd by both - the stand one for smoothies and the immersion blender for mostly everything else since it's more convenient. If you're not buying it just for smoothies I'd go with the immersion blender if you could only afford one, and if it's specifically for smoothies then I'd buy a strong stand blender.
