Interesting places to go for a day

I like to visit different places around the country with my kids aging 4 to 15.
It can be up to 5 hrs by car, by the place itself shouldn't cost us.
We did Niagra Falls ( was quite far) and Washington once ( still have to get back there once, because we didn't finish everything in one day)

I also don't like to meet the whole BP there - I'm trying to get away
Any suggestions?
