Hi - I am looking to buy a new set of elegant dining room chairs but wanted to get an idea of how much people spend. Thanks for participating!

It's all depends on your budget. I didn't vote because my choice is 0. I get all my furniture from gemach or family and friends for free.

I bought used for $65 per chair, but I have a relative who's handy with glue and touch up.

We re-upholstered them ourselves. I think it cost $2-300 altogether for foam, fabric and plastic. (I meant to add up all the receipts but I don't think I ever did). It would have been around $25 per chair to have someone else do it - labor only, not counting fabric.

$500 craigslist for used stunning breakfront + table and two leaves +4 chairs.

Reupholstered them ourselves for $30 I think (we bought a really nice remnant in a fantastic fabric emporium here)

no plastic. DH ferocious about that point, said it made his legs sweat (?)

:-)

I'm in the same boat as the first replier. We got our table free from someone throwing it out, and just bought some plastic chairs. That's what was within our budget.

If you have small kids they will scratch wood, stain fabric and use them for forts. Look at your budget (not mine) family and lifestyle.
Also do shopping around. Like pp you can get great deals.

50 eur per chair, for 8 chairs, but it was a good deal and not real leather.

We got our set at an estate sale. We didn't re-upholster them at all because they were in good enough condition. Estate sales are a good source of furniture. Often, the family members sell the furniture simply because they already have their own and don't have space for more. You can get good older furniture (even vintage/antiques) this way.

Along the same route, a number of my DC got lovely sets from Craigs List.

Protective covering looks so ugly and is very old fashioned. Better to have them stain guarded or have them reupholstered down the line.
