The first step is to lock your car. Cars have locks for a reason.
Crime happens everywhere. Do what you can to protect yourself, but the rest is up to God.

DH's car was stolen off a city street in the middle of the night. Nobody saw anything. He is always so careful to lock the car even at a gas station.
The police didn't want to file the report until 48 hours later because "maybe it was towed and doesn't show up in the system yet" when DH had no outstanding tickets whatsoever. We probably lost time tracking it right there. The car was never recovered.
It was a leased car, so BH we had full coverage. The aggravation and "minor" monetary losses were tough to swallow.
A friend had a very similar experience last year while she was highly pregnant....
It's a scary and crazy world out there.

Lock your car, get a club for the wheel if that helps you feel better.
