I am having 2 bachurim for Shabbos (all meals). I am looking for ideas of foods that boys/men like and that are easy to make.

Deli roll
fried rice with deli
shnitzel
crisp (apple, cranberry, whichever)
potato kugel
cabbage salad with something sweet
sesame noodles

I've found that when I try to experiment and make funky foods with boys over it totally doesn't go, they like normal things that taste good and that they can identify. I've also found that bochurim usually go for challah and dips so you can buy/make

Really? I've found many guys dislike the dips. Even many teen girls.

Stick to gefilte fish, meat and carbs and simple desserts?

I find they go for challah, chummus, anything with chicken/meat, deli roll, potatoes, sweet kugels. Cholent and potato kugel of course. Desserts with lots of whip/chocolate/PB. Fish course never goes down too well, although most bochrim will manage good old gefilte fish with lots of chrayne.

Once I was serving homemade gefilte fish balls - I did plated starters but put out more in case people wanted seconds. Once boy DROWNED his fish in chrayne and mayo, so much of it, I was sure he hated it. But then, when he finished it, he took a second and did the same Wink

Yes, like a pp said, anything recognizable. Nothing too fancy - don't worry about presentation or lettuce leaves Wink

Interestingly, they always go for my lettuce salad that has lots of mango in it. Sometimes I make it a chicken salad. It has a really sweet dressing and lots of craisins too.

Basically, anything simple and unhealthy!

Thanks everyone!
Does anyone have a good recipe for deli roll recipe? I tried making it a couple times but it didn't come out good.

Puff Pastry Sheet - roll out a bit thinner once defrosted
Spread with Mustard
Layer with deli of choice
Roll into log.
Bake on Parchment sheet at 350 for about 30 minutes.

Thanks! Can anyone in Israel tell me a good brand that they use for the puff pastry. That may have been part of the problem.

Meatballs or anything resembling Chinese food always go over very well. Chicken wings baked in VH Garlic Rib sauce are a guaranteed hit.

Sounds yummy. Would love to make something like this, but how do you heat it up for Shabbos lunch?

That's the problem - it has to be served hot.

For lunch, since I see you're in Israel, I'd do an all-American theme. I'd probably go with oven-fried chicken drumsticks (dip in flour, then egg then panko, spray with Pam and bake) which can be served straight from the fridge. With cole slaw, potato salad, veggies and dip, lemonade, fresh fruit and chocolate chip cookies, it's a real crowd pleaser, and not too hard to pull together.

I'm coming to your house for Shabbos lunch!
Btw, I'm in the the states. WISH I was in Israel.

Hi Chickpea. I got confused with luppamom's question about puff pastry. Must be my desire to escape the Canadian winter, and/or lack of caffeine!

I use this recipe from Joy of Kosher, and put in deli instead of tofu (and knowing me I probably add more soy sauce then called for....it's pan licking good mmm not I want some). If you can get deli chunks then that's awesome (like deli ends or whatever they call them) but also good with sliced deli, and I use a pastrami instead of a turkey.
