I know that my son would be very happy with money or basketball tickets (which I'll probably give him anyway), but I also want to give an actual present that can be unwrapped! Any ideas?...but no screens!! Thanks!

Can you give us an idea of your budget? Also, tell us a little bit about your son. What are his interests? (other than basketball). By the way, you can easily put those tickets in a little box and wrap them. It might be a nice surprise actually, because he will expect is to be something else.

I don't have a 17 year old, but here are some thoughts off the top of my head:
- A book/sefer
- A cashmere sweater or scarf or some other luxurious item of clothing you might not normally buy.
- A new wallet with some cash inside.

A new menorah, some new electronic gadget (ipod or cheaper mp3 player) or cheap tablet computer, or itunes gift certificate, gift cert. to local Judaica store, or cuff links.

Thanks for all the suggestions, but I wouldn't actually buy the tickets, my son would choose a game (and I always give him tickets-it's not really a surprise), my son is very into most sports, not into reading at all, and not really into clothing, one year I gave him a carrom board (like mini pool) that he really liked, but now I'm out of ideas...

Is this a 17 year old high school senior? If so, it's not too early for next-year-you-will-be-away-at Yeshiva/college presents. One of those travel Shabbos alarm clocks, some nice luggage, etc.

It would be a great idea, but I want to stay in denial about his going away next year for a little longer!

Am I the only one who thinks it's a bit immature to get a chanukah gift at that age?

Why? I love getting presents and I'm much older than my son! Why should his younger siblings have all the fun! If he had to choose btwn money/tickets or a "thing" present, I'm sure he'doesn't choose the tickets, but why not give him the opportunity to get a present!!!

For anyone with a teenage son- do you still give him a Chanuka present? And what do you give?

Chanuka isn't connected with gift giving, in Israel. BH.

For my teens, I usually hand them cash (on B'days).

Although this year, for a group b'day present, we're planning to buy a Wii. It brings sports and exercise into your living room.

What's your budget? A nice pair of headphones might be appreciated.
